Abu Dhabi – The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center (ALC), part of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, is set to organize the eighth annual Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute for European History, at the Institute’s headquarters in Mainz, Germany. This is the first time the event has taken place outside the emirate.
Taking place on October 18, ahead of the Centre’s first appearance at the Frankfurt International Book Fair (October 20-24), the 2021 Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference will be held under the theme “Arabic Language and Cultural Communication : literature Translation and the impact of cultural and historical specificities.” The conference is part of a series of cultural events organized by the “Kalima” project for the translation of ALC within the framework of its participation in the Frankfurt fair.
The conference brings together eminent scholars to address important issues regarding translation from Arabic into German, focusing on the translation of novels, children’s literature, films and scientific papers. The topics covered will also focus on the modes of transmission of images and texts – particularly in terms of heritage, poetry and prose – as well as the impact of history and culture on translation.
The event will bring together researchers and translators from the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt, as well as Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the United States. It offers the opportunity to exchange on translated works and to discover new publications, offering a platform for in-depth research on the different categories of translation. The conference will be held in Arabic, German and English.

The Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference was launched in 2012 to run alongside the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. The conference covers all topics concerning the field of translation, both from and into Arabic, highlighting the challenges faced and striving to stimulate translation efforts in the region.
